Improved Eurostar access 'will help environment'Travel trends: 03 January 2008Extending the reach of the Eurostar network could have a number of environmental benefits, a politician has claimed. Liberal Democrat county councillor Rod Fletcher said that improving the accessibility of St Pancras International to people in the rest of the UK would make them more likely to travel abroad by train. He stated that this would help tackle climate change as it would make Eurostar a more viable means of going overseas, therefore reducing demand for flights to other countries. Councillor Fletcher commented: "At a time when everyone is under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, some train services from the north-west must be integrated with Eurostar services to and from St Pancras to help combat cheap, low-cost airline services." A number of methods of opening up the Eurostar network have been suggested, such as creating a high-speed rail link between London and the north of England. In addition, he has proposed altering the route of some West Coast Mainline services to take in St Pancras instead of London Euston, thereby allowing people in the north direct access to a Eurostar station.
