Morocco attracts winter touristsDestination trends: 5 March 2008Morocco is proving to be a highly popular winter holiday destination, new figures have revealed. Official statistics showed that during January 2008, the north African country attracted more than 22,000 British leisure travellers. The figures, cited by Maghreb Arabe Press, also showed that visitor numbers overall were up on those recorded 12 months earlier. More than 409,000 holidaymakers went to Morocco during the first month of 2008 - 11 per cent more than in January 2007. Britons were not the only group of people to visit the country during this period, as they were outnumbered by French and Spanish tourists. Morocco also attracted thousands of visitors from other European countries, such as the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. According to official figures, more than seven million holidaymakers visited the country last year. The government wants to boost this figure to ten million within the next two years.
