Morocco to attract more tourists this year, says minister

Morocco looks set to attract more and more foreign leisure travellers this year, a government official believes.

According to tourism minister Mohamed Boussaid, the tourism sector in Morocco is currently very healthy and continuing to grow, Reuters reports.

The north African country has recently been enjoying a consistent increase in popularity, with annual visitor numbers rising to just over seven million in 2007.

Morocco's government is keen to encourage further growth due to the economic benefits this creates and has committed to attracting ten million people a year by 2010.

Mr Boussaid remarked: "Tourism's January growth was 12 per cent and February's growth was of 15 per cent, so we are seeing an acceleration in tourism growth."

He added that extra tourist accommodation is being developed across the country in order to cope with the extra capacity.
