Record numbers of Irish 'spend Christmas abroad'Travel trends: 21 December 2007Hot and sunny destinations abroad are proving to be tempting places to visit for Irish consumers, according to one holiday firm. Limerick Travel stated that the number of people from Ireland travelling abroad for Christmas had reached record levels. Tony Brazil, director of the company, told the Limerick Post that this trend had been partially fuelled by the growth of low-cost aviation. He commented: "All the extra flights provided by the low-cost-carriers are also selling well." Mr Brazil added that many of those going abroad at Christmas were overseas property owners who wanted to spend Christmas in their alternative residence. This was said to partially account for the popularity of countries such as Spain and Portugal among festive tourists, as many Irish people have holiday homes there. A similar trend in the UK was recently highlighted by the Association of British Travel Agents. The organisation said that at least 3.5 million Britons would be out of the country during the Christmas and New Year period. See our featured properties world wide
