Tourism drives Montenegrin economy

Property investment abroad: 7 April 2008

Tourism in Montenegro is contributing to the country's economic expansion, according to new figures.

The International Herald Tribune stated that the eastern European nation is currently seeing annual economic growth of about eight per cent.

Since Montenegro's traditional industries are now "stagnating", the publication believes that the economy has become highly reliant on the holiday industry.

This has triggered further growth in the economy by enhancing its appeal to overseas property investors, as many are purchasing rental accommodation with a view to letting it out to holidaymakers.

According to the newspaper, more than £800,000 has been pumped into the Montenegrin economy by foreign investors over the last two years.

This has led to what the publication describes as a "real estate sales boom", especially in coastal areas.

According to the Foreign Property Buyer website, house prices in the eastern European country have risen by about 20 per cent in the last few years.
