Tourists spend more in Canada

The amount holidaymakers are spending in Canada went up towards the end of last year, official figures have revealed.

Statistics Canada stated that tourists in the North American nation spent £34.5 billion during 2007, reports the Canadian Press.

This is 4.3 per cent more than the figure recorded 12 months earlier and represents a further boost to the tourism industry.

The sector was badly hit by the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) five years ago.

However, it has now experienced growth throughout 18 consecutive quarters, with spending going up by 1.4 per cent during the final quarter of 2007.

Commenting on the figures, Statistics Canada highlighted the fact that many tourists were Canadian nationals choosing to visit other parts of the country.

This comes after Express Travel World praised Canada for offering a wide variety of leisure attractions, including vibrant cities and attractive scenery.
