UK holidaymakers 'travelling outside Europe'Destination trends: 27 December 2007Holidaymakers from the north-east are increasingly choosing to venture outside of Europe, it has been revealed. Thomson travel agents stated that people from the region were choosing to travel to a variety of long-haul destinations this winter. African countries were said to be especially popular with leisure travellers, in particular Egypt and Cape Verde. Rebecca McLeod, assistant manager of Thomson's Newborough outlet, commented: "People are prepared to travel longer although many still prefer to do the short hauls." Speaking to the Scarborough Evening News, she added that countries such as Cape Verde were popular because they offered warm weather all year round. The comments come a peak period for the travel industry, as many different firms and airports have reported a surge in the number of bookings for foreign holidays this Christmas. According to Lastminute.com, the number of Britons choosing to spend the festive season abroad is 11 per cent higher than at the same time last year.
