Holidaymakers looking for a vacation on a hot sunny island may like to try the Greek island of Ithaki. Located west of the Greek mainland in the Ionian Sea, this beautiful island has many interesting things for holidaymakers to do. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, cottages, B&Bs and campsites.
There are a number of beaches to choose from in Ithaki including Filatro and Dexa Beaches. Holidaymakers can relax on the mainly pebbly beaches and enjoy a swim in the warm sea. With many wonderful views to enjoy on the island, there are also plenty of places to go hiking and cycling through the beaches, hills and villages. A few water sports are available on the island such as kitesurfing and windsurfing and several places hire out pedaloes. Holidaymakers can also take sailing trips on the Ionian Sea, which is clear and calm and very safe for sailing. There are a number of taverns and restaurants in Ithaki, which serve mainly traditional Greek fare. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages from shops and markets on the island. Tourists can buy many different gifts and souvenirs from shops here too.
The island has many interesting places to visit such as the capital, Vathy, home to one of the world’s largest natural harbours. Ithaki was the homeland of Odysseus and there are two sites connected to him well worth visiting. One is Arethousa Spring and the other is the Cave of Nymphs. Others good places to visit are the Archaeological Museum and the Monastery of the Virgin Mary. Holidaymakers can take a day trip to neighbouring island Kefalonia where there are many golden sandy beaches, hiking routes and some amazing caves.
The warmest time of the year to visit Ithaki is July and August when the average high is approximately 30 degrees centigrade. Between June and August there is very little rain on the island, whereas December sees an average of 186mm rainfall. As well as being the wettest months, December and January are also the coolest with the average minimum temperatures around 5 to 7 degrees centigrade.
Holidaymakers can get flights to Athens International Airport (ATH). There are direct flights to Athens from Amsterdam, (AMS) Berlin-Schonefeld (SXF), Brussels (BRU), Dublin (DUB), London-Heathrow (LHW), London-Gatwick (LGW), Madrid (MAD), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) amongst others. From here visitors should then take a three hour bus journey to Patras. From here a ferry service runs to Ithaki, which takes about four hours. Alternatively holidaymakers can fly to Kefalonia Island Airport (EFL) and take a 50 minute ferry ride to Ithaki. Flights arrive at Kefalonia from Athens (ATH) all year round as well as seasonally from Birmingham (BHX), Dublin (DUB), London-Gatwick (LGW), Manchester (MAN) Vienna (VIE) as well as some other British airports. Some car rental firms are located on the island but it may be easier to rent a vehicle on Kefalonia and bring it over on the ferry.
