Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Kerlouan, France your home away from home.
Kerlouan is a rural destination on the north coast of France, in the Finistere department of Brittany. This part of Brittany is unspoilt, largely rural and perfect for those seeking a relaxing family break or ‘get away from it all’ holiday – yet remains just a short distance from Brest, the largest and busiest city in the department. A combination of natural and man-made attractions makes Kerlouan and the surrounding area a destination that sees many repeat visitors year upon year.
Sandy beaches are just a few minutes’ walk from the majority of Kerlouan holiday rental choices, with this close and easy access meaning a few hours relaxing on the beach does not end up consuming the whole day. After a couple of hours of sunning it up, many visitors like to do something a little more active, with many outdoor pursuits options available in the local area. The style of rock climbing known as ‘bouldering’ is particularly popular in Kerlouan, making the most of the rocky scenery found along this part of the coast.
The north coast is particularly unspoilt and largely tourist free, meaning a series of walks and hikes can be enjoyed without battling against the crowds. The most notable sight found when walking around the village is the Kerlouan transmitter, a piece of equipment used for transmitting to submerged submarines, along the VLF.
Kerlouan and the surrounding area is steeped in tradition, and in Brittany tradition means the Breton language and customs. As foreign visitors tour the village they may be surprised to hear this old Celtic language with such regularity, as it is still spoken by many of the local residents in the villages homes, shops and cafe-bars. Amenities in Kerlouan are basic but adequate for those on a self-catering holiday.
Brest (34km) is the largest city in the Finistere department, and can be reached in well under an hour from Kerlouan. Attractions in Brest are numerous, with the city most visited for the Pont de Recouvrance drawbridge and the fountain-laden street known as Rue de Siam. If you are looking for a closer daytrip option from Kerlouan, consider making the short journey to Guisseny (4km) or the marginally further away Goulven (7km).
The weather in the northern half of Brittany is little different to the weather on the south coast of England, with warm summers, a pleasant spring and a slightly chilly autumn and winter. This means that the period between May and September is the most popular with tourists to Kerlouan, when temperatures usually range between 18°C and 28°C.
Brest Bretagne Airport (BES) is 29km from Kerlouan, making it the nearest international airport. UK airline Flybe heads to this destination from Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton, whilst Irish budget operator flies there from Dublin and London Luton. Many of these flights are seasonal, however, so check your dates well in advance.
