La Bastide Clairence and the Basque Country
The village of La Bastide Clairence, situated in the heart of the Basque Country, near the Spanish border, is voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is an artisan village with many craft workshops and the village has an ancient Israelite cemetery. Nearby are the picture-perfect villages of Cambo-les-Bains, Espelette, Ainhoa and Sare to name but a few. The Basque Country is still largely unspoilt and a fascinating and beautiful region. The coastline is famous for its excellent surfing conditions and sandy beaches and there are many beautiful towns such as Biarritz, St. Jean de Luz, Bayonne, etc. The countryside inland is spectacular, very reminiscent of New Zealand, with rolling hills and the backdrop of the snow-covered Pyrenees. The traditional Basque houses and farmhouses are beautiful and wood and shutters are always in the Basque colours of ox-blood red, blue or green.
The Basque cuisine is something to be experienced, especially the delicious specialities such as 'piquillos farcies' and 'pintxos' and fresh fish. The restaurants are always of a high standard but also very reasonable.
The Basques are a proud people and they have many different festivals celebrating Basque traditions and music. Every village has a fronton where the Basque game of Pelote is played.
On the Spanish side, the towns of San Sebastian and Bilbao are extremely rich in culture and San Sebastian has the most Michelin starred restaurants in Europe. Pamplona is also just a day trip from La Bastide Clairence.
In short, the Basque Country has something to offer for everyone and is well worth exploring. You are sure to return.
