Lanjaron is a municipality and spa town in the Spanish province of Granada, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A big draw for Lanjaron is the presence of Spain’s only Chalybeate baths. Chalybeate (meaning ‘containing iron’) waters are said to have health-boosting properties, and a range of treatments are available are the Balneario thermal baths – some more orthodox than others. A treatment – such as an underwater massage, reflexology or lymphatic drainage at the Balneario should be a vital part of anybody’s stay in Lanjaron.

Water is a key element for the town. Lanjaron is also famous for having Spain’s first established eponymous bottled water company. The town has five natural springs of medicinal waters, which are then bottled and sold around the world. Even one of the key summer festivals (the Water Fiesta) is essentially a giant water fight!

The town also has several historical sites worth visiting, including the remains of an Arab castle that guards the Lanjaron gorge, a 16th century church and the fabulous architecture of the town’s old quarter. A sightseeing walk can be enjoyed around the town, and the castle offers great views of the surrounding mountains. More active visitors can get outside of the town and enjoy a spot of rock climbing, hiking or mountain biking at Lanjaron gorge.

Granada lies 43km away, and is most well-known as being home to the Alhambra Palace. This series of buildings and gardens stands at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Further south, the Costa Tropical is home to some beautiful nature areas, picturesque villages, sandy beaches and great entertainment – though is not as over-run with tourists as the neighbouring Costa del Sol.
