Le Bugue is the crossroads of the Dordogne, and all the attractions of the Dordogne are well within reach of a Le Bugue property. There is no reason to leave Le Bugue once you arrive though. Its position on the banks of the River Vezere means that there is plenty of entertainment to be found within the town, and the many restaurants, bars and cafes take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings. Le Bugue is also home to the largest private aquarium in Europe, the Aquarium de Perigord Noir, which is an absolute must see for children and adults alike. Market day in Le Bugue falls on a Tuesday, and sees the whole town come to life with noises and smells, as the Le Bugue market is now the best in the region.
Canoeing along the River Vezere is a magnificently peaceful way to spend an afternoon from a holiday rental villa in Le Bugue, giving a unique viewpoint from which to explore the town and the countryside that surrounds the town. A little way outside Le Bugue is the fascinating Village du Bournat, a reconstruction of a typical 19th century French village, complete with local craftsmen plying their skills. History, and especially pre-history, is in rich supply in and around Le Bugue. The amazing caves of Bara-Bahau cut over 100m into the earth’s surface, and are adorned with pre-historic representations of boar, bear and bison which date back to around 15,000 BC. The colossal Gouffe de Proumeyssac Caves are the most impressive underground caves anywhere in France, with huge stalagmites and stalactites forming a stunning maze through the caverns. It is the Sorcerer’s Caves of Saint-Cirq that really excites visitors though, decorated with some fantastically detailed carvings, including a remarkably detailed human face.

The closest town to Le Bugue is Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil, home to the oldest human skeleton ever found. Aside from its pre-historic claim to fame, Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil is a wonderful rural town to visit, surrounded by beautiful countryside just begging to be explored.
