The Serre Chevalier ski area is huge, with 63 lifts servicing a 2800m ski-able vertical. The tree line is at 2100m, leaving 700m of open bowls and excellent terrain. In the summer the Serre Chevalier resort is open for business as well, and provides excellent walking areas and mountain biking. The area is so great for Mountain Biking in the summer that it hosted the 2008 French Championships and the BMX European Games in 2010.

In the nearby town of Briancon visitors can see the various “Fortifications of Vauban”, so named after their designer, King Louis XIV’s military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. These fortifications were developed in the 17th Century in defence against the Austrians. The town itself is known as the highest city in Europe, and is well worth a visit. During the summer, the nearby peaks and valleys open up into a wonderland of walking and mountain biking. As it is up in the mountains, the weather is quite changeable, so it is always advisable to pack for all seasons. However, the climate in the southern Alps is lovely.
