A village that shares its name with several others in France, Le Puy in the Gironde department is a small village that has remained largely untouched by tourism. The commune is recognisable for its windmills, which often sit alone in sprawling vineyards, and provide a secluded and rural feel to any holiday in the commune. If you are looking for a peaceful and traditional village in Gironde, Le Puy is a good an example as any.
Agriculture is the main economy in Le Puy, with plums, soya and wheat some of the main items under production. Wine is also produced in the area, with the famous Entre deux Mers (meaning: ‘between two seas’) variety the local speciality. If you have not already done so (or even if you have), trying a few glasses of this dry white wine is a must, and goes down particularly well when relaxing in the sunshine in a local bar, or in the comfort of your self-catering holiday villa in Le Puy.
Fishing is a popular activity in the lakes and reservoirs around Le Puy, with carp, pike and roach the most commonly caught types of fish. Around the commune are basic amenities and a few points of interest, with the most notable site in the village centre being the parish church of St Anne.
Nearby Monsegur is also well worth a look during your stay in Le Puy, and the similarly-sized village can be reached on foot or by bicycle in just a few minutes, as it is just over 1km away. Monsegur is most popular for its Friday morning market, where a variety of local food and drink items, artwork and crafts can be picked up at bargain prices – ideal as souvenirs of for using in your Le Puy holiday rental accommodation.
With Le Puy being a small village, it is likely that those holidaying here will decide to venture outside its borders at some point during their vacation. The Entre Deux Mers region is renowned for its hilly landscapes, vineyards and picturesque medieval villages, with the commune of Tabanac (45km) being a destination that contains great examples of all three. A little closer to Le Puy is St Foy Le Grande (23km), an old bastide town which is the home of yet another excellent weekly market.
The weather in Le Puy is perfect for a spring, summer or early autumn break, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine the norm during these times of the year. On average, monthly rainfall ranges between 60mm and 110mm per month, with the highest levels of precipitation found at the back end of the year.
Visitors travelling from the United Kingdom to pre-booked holiday rental accommodation in Le Puy will undoubtedly find it easiest to use air travel, with Bordeaux Airport (BOD) located 79km to the south-east. A wide selection of flights are available between the UK and Bordeaux, so the best advice is to shop around, book early and get the best deal available.
