Leba – One of Poland’s most popular Coastal Resorts

Leba is a lovely fishing port and holiday resort about 100km from Gdansk. It has long sandy beaches. Even at the height of the holiday season you should be able to find un-crowded stretches of beach – if you do not mind walking.

As well as relaxing on the beach, you can wind-surf and horse-ride. You can also go deep-sea fishing; trips last for about 8 hours and start by the quay early most mornings (only for the adventurous, and make sure you go with a boat which provides life jackets, as the sea can (of course!) be rough at times).

Leba has lots of bars and restaurants where you can dine on freshly caught (or smoked) fish, and enjoy Polish beer. As in all Poland, wine in restaurants can be quite expensive and most people drink beer or vodka.

Lake Lebsko, the beautiful Slowinski National Park, and huge sand dunes (the highest in Europe) are west of Leba – a short bicycle or car journey away. You have to park your car at the edge of the National Park and from there you can visit the sand dunes by horse and wagon, by foot (but it is several miles, with more walking up and down the dunes when you get there) or (part of the way) by boat along the lake (to be recommended on a fine day). In the middle of summer take mosquito repellent with you. There is a marvellous view of sea, beaches, dunes and forests from the top of the highest dune.

There is another beautiful lake, Lake Sarbsko, to the east of Leba. All around the lakes are forests and peaceful countryside.

To the south of Leba is the pleasant and historic town of Lebork. This is well worth visiting to see what life in a provincial Polish town is like – and for shopping. Further south a day trip to the gentle Pomeranian hills and lakes (where you can hire canoes) is highly recommended.

Gdansk is easily reached along the E28 from Lebork (or for a more leisurely drive cross-country from Leba to Wejherowo and then onto the E28). Gdansk is a beautiful old city. Every August the biggest craft fair in Europe is held there – Janmark Dominikanski – which is definitely worth visiting.

Leba is an excellent seaside resort to relax and when you want a change from the beach, to tour some of the Baltic coast and inland Pomeranian Lake District.
