Whilst swinging on a hammock or lounging around by a pool suits some people on holidays in Folkstone, there is much more to do should you so choose. The Folkstone Marine Park, with its artificial reef, is a veritable playground for water-based activities. The scuba diving here is absolutely amazing, and if you do not have your PADI licence, then you can even get one during your stay. If scuba diving isn’t your thing, then the snorkelling is as equally amazing. Other possible activities available in the area include tennis, basketball, running and cycling.
Barbados is quite a small island, and exploring it is simple on either public transport or with a hire car. Certainly a drive around it is recommended, and you will discover many idyllic sandy bays and beaches this way. One of the most popular tourist attractions on the island is the Harrison’s Cave, with its huge caverns and magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. A visit to the Caribbean would not be complete without a rum tour, and if you do not already have a taste for the spirit, you may well have at the end of the tour! Finally, for something different, why not take a day out at the races? The Garrison Savannah makes for an interesting day out, and grandstand seats cost less than ten pounds.
Barbados basically has two seasons – a wet season between June and November, and the dry season between December and May. A holiday in Folkstone is possible at any time of year, but is obviously better during the dry season. Temperatures during this period range between 28 and 31 degrees Celsius, and rainfall is not an issue. The temperatures are, in fact, almost the same during the wet season, but torrential rains can and do occur.
Grantley Adams Airport (BGI) is located on the south of the island, and has connections with the USA as well as Europe. Travellers from the UK can catch Virgin Atlantic flights from London Gatwick (LGW) or on Thomson Airways from Birmingham (BHX). It is possible to rent a car at the airport for your holiday in Folkstone, but you may just wish to hire one locally on a day by day basis when needed.
