Anyone searching for a great holiday in the north of France might like to try the commune of Pont-d’Ouilly. Located in the Calvados department within the region of Normandy, this village offers many things for holidaymakers to see and do. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, B&Bs, gites, apartments and campsites.
Pont-d’Ouilly is situated in a scenic area of Normandy with beautiful countryside and rivers that holidaymakers should explore by hiking or cycling. The rivers and other waterways here are good for swimming, fishing and paddle boating. There are numerous tennis courts open to the public as well as golf courses with the nearest being 12 kilometres away in Clecy. Holidaymakers can enjoy a day out on the north coast with some lovely beaches within an hour’s drive of Pont-d’Ouilly. Other popular activities here include mountain biking, horse riding and paragliding. In and around Pont-d’Ouilly there are good restaurants, cafes and bars serving local dishes. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drinks from the local shops and markets.
Pont-d’Ouilly is located conveniently near to some wonderful historic places of interest such as Falaise, which is just 20 minutes away. Amongst the fine attractions in Falaise is the castle that once belonged to William the Conqueror. Visitors will also find some remarkable gardens in the area such as the Jardins du Chateau de Vendeuvre, which are just 27 kilometres from Pont-d’Ouilly. Argentan is another town well worth a visit as it features some interesting buildings such as the 12th century Marguerite Tower and the St Nicolas Chapel and castle. Caen is about 50 minute’s drive away and has some fabulous attractions such as the 11th century castle, which is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Western Europe. Holidaymakers will also be able to visit abbeys, churches and the beautiful botanical gardens in Caen.
July and August are the warmest months of the year in Normandy with average high temperatures of 21 degrees centigrade. January and February are the coolest months with average highs of 9 degrees and lows of 4 degrees centigrade. As well as being one of the coldest months, February is also usually the driest with an average of 49mm of rainfall. December sees the highest level of precipitation with an average of 84mm.
Rennes – Saint-Jacques Airport (RNS) is approximately two and a half hour’s drive from Pont-d’Ouilly. Flights arrive here from Southampton (SOU) year round as well as seasonally from Cork (ORK), Dublin (DUB), Edinburgh (EDI), Exeter (EXT) and Manchester (MAN). Alamo, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National/Citer and Sixt are car rental firms located at the airport. Alternatively, visitors from the UK can catch a ferry from Portsmouth to Ouistreham and drive approximately one hour to Pont-d'Ouilly.
