Holidaymakers looking for a fun vacation in the far north of Europe should pay a visit to Reykjavik in Iceland. Although not thought of as a popular tourist destination, Iceland has many fantastic surprises to provide a fantastic vacation. The winter season offers some good skiing for holidaymakers with three ski areas close to Reykjavik. The lake freezes over in the winter and encourages people to go ice skating although there is also a skating hall in the city too. The summer also offers many activities including hiking, cycling and horse riding.

Swimming in the hot pools is very popular here with the Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach especially popular as sand has been imported from North Africa. Various boat trips are available to provide tourists the chance to see whales, puffins and other marine life. Some 10 kilometres from the city is an 18-hole golf course.

Reykjavik has several bars, cafes and restaurants with a variety of dining options including plenty of Scandinavian dishes and other international cuisine too. A selection of shops and supermarkets can be found here with a few places for self catering holidaymakers to purchase food and drink. Tourists will also find stores selling gifts and souvenirs in the city.

Places to visit on holiday to Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is blessed with many fantastic places to visit including museums, buildings and natural features. Museums here include the Art Museum, the Museum of Photography and the Vikin Maritime Museum. There are several art galleries here too including the ASi Art Museum, Kling & Bang and the National Gallery of Iceland. Visitors may like to see some interesting old buildings in the city with some of the oldest houses lining Ingólfstorg square.

Another interesting piece of architecture to be found here is Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík, which is a church. The Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Garden is well worth a visit too as is the Botanic Gardens, which houses over 5,000 species of subarctic plants. A visit to Iceland would not be complete with visit to the natural springs and the Volcano Show. Walking and boat tours are also available to give visitors a good trip around the city.

The mildest time of the year in Reykjavik is July and August when the average high temperature is approximately 13 degrees centigrade. The coldest month of the year is January when the average minimum temperature is approximately -3 degrees centigrade. Precipitation is quite evenly spread throughout the year. October is usually the wettest with an average of 85mm of rainfall spread over 14.5 days.

Travel to Reykjavik, Iceland

Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is approximately 50 kilometres from Reykjavik. Flights arrive here from various international airports including Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin-Tegel (TXL), London-Gatwick (LGW), London-Heathrow (LHW), New York (JFK), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Stockholm-Arlanda (ARN), Toronto-Pearson (YYZ) and Vienna (VIE) amongst others. Several car hire firms are located at the airport including Avis, Budget, Car Rentals, Europcar and Hertz.
