La Lantejuela is a small town of around 4,000 inhabitants in the province of Seville. The town’s main claim to fame is that it was probably the site of the Battle of Munda, the last battle of Julius Caesar, in 45BC.
Just outside the town is the Lantejuela Nature Reserve, a wetland area with two saltwater lakes: Laguna de Calderon and Laguna de la Lantejuela which can actually dry up completely in the summer. The shores of the lake are excellent for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Waders, white-headed ducks and godwits are common in migration periods and harriers and buzzards are frequently seen in the area. The surrounding countryside is popular for hiking, cycling, horseback riding and scenic drives. Walkers can head off into the hills along the 28 km Via Verde from their holiday cottages in La Lantejuela. At the end of the day, sample the regional cuisine and delicious tapas in the small bars and restaurants in the area.
Seville is a wonderful city to visit from your holiday rental in La Lantejuela. It is known for its splendid Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Torre de Oro which houses the city’s Archaeological Museum. This scenic city beside the Guadalquivir River has a rich history dating back to Roman times. A little further away are the national parks and Moorish Mezquita of Cordoba. The city of Granada is well worth driving to through the dramatic mountain scenery. Granada is home to the World Heritage Alhambra Palace with its cliff top position and famous water gardens. Closer to home are the historic towns of Antequera and the lovely Carmona with its historic tower and roman necropolis.
La Lantejuela holiday villas enjoy hot sunny summers and mild showery winters. From October to March temperatures range between 17-21°C (63-70°F) although it is cooler inland in the mountains. During the summer, temperatures are around 21-30°C (70-86°F) and there is zero rainfall. The maximum rainfall in the province of Seville is in the winter when around 150-175mm (6-7 inches) rainfall can be expected.
The nearest airport to La Lantejuela holiday villas is Seville San Pablo (SVQ) Airport which is 75 km away. The airport serves many European airlines including budget airlines Ryanair and easyJet. Both these airlines fly to Seville from London Gatwick and Ryanair also offers flights from several other UK cities including Bristol, Dublin, East Midlands and Liverpool. La Lantejuela is very easy to reach in less than an hour along the A-4 autovia. A hire car is useful for getting to and from the airport and for exploring the surrounding area.
