The city of Lleida (often also spelt 'Lerida' in English) is the capital of the province, and the biggest city of inland Catalonia, being the home of over 30% of the province’s residents. These include the 18th Century Seu Vella Cathedral – which is built in both Gothic and Romanesque styles, and the former hospital – which is also built in the Gothic style, and is now home to an interesting museum and visitor centre.

This is the main town in the area for shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation, and offers close and easy access to the Bacquiera-Beret ski resort, which has over 100km of runs for skiers of all levels of ability, as well as many other outdoor sports options to suit the weather.

There is a new airport currently under construction in Lleida, but until then visitors will have to find the closest viable alternative to their chosen accommodation, usually Barcelona. It is worth noting that if you are holidaying in the far north of the province, you may be able to find cheaper and more convenient flights to French destinations such as Toulouse than to Spanish destinations.
