The mains sites in Lorca are historical ones, with the 16th century Church of San Francisco and the 17th century Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) particular highlights. Much of the action is centred around the Plaza de Espana, which itself is slap bang in the middle of the historical centre of town. The old town consists of a number of narrowing winding streets and alleyways, which make for great exploring and sightseeing at a leisurely pace.
Lorca is also a recommended destination for those looking to enjoy the countryside of the Murcia region, with plenty of walking and hiking routes to choose from, and plenty of high-quality photographic opportunities for those attracted to roaming landscapes and unspoilt scenery.
Despite its historical heritage and laid-back feel, Lorca still has enough to keep more active visitors happy. There are good shopping and dining options within the town and a bevy of vibrant fiestas to be enjoyed at various times of the year, including the ten-day Grand Feria, which is held every September.
Though there are several bars and cafés within the town centre, those seeking a more active nightlife may be best to head to Murcia, which – thanks to the excellent transport links – can be reached in under an hour.

Small towns such as Huercal Overa (42km) and Puerto Lumbreras (17km) offer plenty for a relaxing day trip, whilst vibrant Murcia (74km) has all of the attractions you would expect of one of Spain's largest cities.

Mild winters and warm summers characterise the local climate, and with over 300 days of sun to be enjoyed every year, it is likely that even those who visit in the middle of winter will catch a few rays – though make sure you pack a jacket, as evening temperatures can plummet down towards 4C.

Visitors to Lorca are spoilt for choice when it comes to flights, with Alicante (ALC), Almeria (LEI) and Murcia – San Javier (MJV) all within close proximity. The cheapest offerings are usually to the latter of the three destinations, as Murcia Airport is served by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Jet2.
