Things to do in Lostwithiel, Cornwall

History is alive in this parish, and anyone who enters will be enriched by a nice offering of different fascinating locations. Though many of the original structures, in the community, were destroyed after an uprising in the 1700’s many original ruins remain. A look up the River Fowey is the first reminder of Lostwithiel’s medieval past. Edward the Black Prince built the Restormel Castle where ruins of the original structures circular walls remain. Though the ruins are reason enough for a visit, a pleasant walk up the path to the castle gives a stunning view, on top of a large hill.

Another plainly visible architectural gem, in Lostwithiel, is St Bartholomew’s church reaching high above the skyline of the community. This 12th century church was built centuries ago, in the same location as the original church which was built in 542AD. This church has served many purposes, including everything from a place of worship to a stable for horses during the country’s civil war. Another significant place of worship of equal interest is St Winnow, an ancient church known for its beautiful stained glass. Further historical reminders of Lostwithiel’s past are housed in the Lostwithiel Museum which tells the story of the community’s history found by the Normans many centuries ago, and its later history as the chief port of the area, as well as its mining trade and agricultural history.

A 17th century estate is another must see. Lanhydrock is located a short distance outside of Lostwithiel. In addition to the architectural beauty of the estate are gardens of rare shrubs and trees, as well as over 400 acres of woodland. Several wings are open for public view which gives visitors a better understanding of the opulent lifestyle of its 16th century and 17th century inhabitants. Majestic murals and unique plaster work are only a few of the many beautiful characteristics of this home.
