The main villages in the Lourinha area are Peniche, Lourinha village and Baleal. Peniche is perhaps most popular with tourists as it has a number of decent shops and a fishing harbour. These areas are also where you will find some of the best restaurants in the region, with seafood being the speciality of many. If you prefer to do your own cooking, you will discover that some of the freshest and most delicious fish can be found at the markets around these villages, with prices far cheaper than most tourists will be used to paying. Some of the smaller villages of the region are also worthy of a daytrip, with Obidos and Ericeira two of the finest examples, with their cobbled streets and cosy cafes.
The beaches of the Atlantic coast are within a stone’s throw of most of the accommodation in Lourinha area, and offering good quality sunbathing and surfing, without being overly crowded by tourists. Surfing is one of the most popular pastimes in this part of Portugal, and some of the best action can be found near Supertubos, near Peniche. The Lourinha area boasts 12km of coastline, which harbours several good beaches.

A car is almost vital to make the most of a visit to the Lourinha area, but luckily car hire in Portugal is some of the cheapest in Europe. Caldas de Rainha is just a short drive north of the Lourinha area, and the home of one of the regions finest markets. The city of Torres Vedras, 25km south, is also worth a look, and is best known for its light, refreshing wines, and its series of fortified defences – known as the Lines of Torres Vedras.

A Mediterranean climate means that the Lourinha area has mild winters and warm summers, meaning any time of the year is good for a visit. This also means that tourist numbers are spread out throughout the year, so the area always has a scattering of visitors, but is never over-run with foreign tourists.

The nearest airport to the Lourinha area is Lisbon Airport (LIS), 54km away, which receives flights from the UK through Easyjet, Bmibaby and British Airways, amongst other airlines. Flight time from the UK is around two hours, and a stop-off in the capital is strongly recommended.
