If you prefer to do your own cooking, you will discover that some of the freshest and most delicious fish can be found at the markets around these villages, with prices far cheaper than most tourists will be used to paying. Some of the smaller villages of the region are also worthy of a daytrip, with Obidos and Ericeira two of the finest examples, with their cobbled streets and cosy cafes.

The beaches of the Atlantic coast are within a stone’s throw of most of the accommodation in Lourinha area, and offering good quality sunbathing and surfing, without being overly crowded by tourists. Caldas de Rainha is just a short drive north of the Lourinha area, and the home of one of the regions finest markets. The city of Torres Vedras, 25km south, is also worth a look, and is best known for its light, refreshing wines, and its series of fortified defences – known as the Lines of Torres Vedras.
