The best way to start exploring is by walking round the Renaissance walls.

Lucca is known as the best region in Italy for walking and hiking. The many glorious parks, especially the Parco della Orecchiella and the Garfangnana Natural Park of Tuscany, which is filled with soaring peaks, lush meadows, medieval fortresses and forests where wolves still roam wild provide a magnificent rural retreat. It is well worth a visit to walk and cycle in the summer, and to tackle the ski slopes in the winter. Walks can end at the caves of the Wind, Devil’s Bridge, or the sunken village of Vagli.
