Mael-Carhaix is a pretty village about 100km east of Brest in the heart of the Brittany countryside. It has a bar/restaurant, a local boulangerie for fresh croissants and crusty bread, banks, grocery stores and other small shops, providing for self-catering holiday homes and visitors in the area.
Walking Tours
The area around your Mael-Carhaix holiday home offers scenic walks along fairly flat terrain through scenic farmland and rural countryside. From the port town of Lannion there are two walking tours from the maps provided by the tourist office.
Markets
Most towns in Brittany have weekly markets which sell fresh seasonal produce, meat, cheese, plants and other household essentials. Lannion has a market on Thursdays.
Village Lake
The lake is within easy reach of holiday rentals in Mael-Carhaix and offers swimming, sunbathing, fishing and pedalos as well as a play area for children.
Concarneau
This large fishing port, about 67km southwest of your holiday rental in Mael-Carhaix is typical of many small towns along the coast of Brittany. Visit the fish market in town or cross the old drawbridge to the Ville Close (Old Town) on a rocky island just offshore. The main street is lined with historic buildings and in summer is bedecked with flowers. Walk around the 17th century defensive ramparts or pay a visit to the fascinating Fishing Museum.
Morlaix
Morlaix is easy to identify with its pink granite viaduct which crosses the valley above the town. This attractive town on the northern coast of Brittany has half-timbered houses lining the medieval streets. The town museum is in the Jacobin Convent where Mary Queen of Scots spent the night in 1548. Admire the luxury yachts in the bay and the Chateau du Taureau on its own small island.
Visit the Châteaux
This area of Brittany has many grand castles and chateaux which capture the essence of the local history and the battles fought over this territory. Chateau de St Malo was the first symbol of ducal power and is known as the Bastille of the West. Chateau de Josselin is an 11th century castle, largely rebuilt by Olivier de Clisson in the 14th century and still owned by his descendants. Finally, the Chateau de Dinan towers 174 feet high near the Saint Louis gate in Dinan.
Mael-Carhaix has a similar climate to southwest England with sunny summers averaging 20°C (68° F) and mild wet winters with daytime highs of around 9° C (48°F). Frost and snow are very rare. From October to March showers can be frequent and heavy.
Holiday homes in Mael-Carhaix are well served by the St Brieuc (SBK) Airport which is 50km away, and the Brest (BES) Airport which is 76km away. Ryanair and Flybe both provide regular cheap flights to Brest. Brittany Ferries also sail from Plymouth to Roscoff or to St Malo for those wanting to bring their own car to Brittany.
