Situated in the heart of Umbria, Italy, Magione is a delightful rural town overlooking the still waters of Lake Trasimeno. Magione holidays are a real feast of good living and peace. Surrounded by wonderfully unspoilt scenery, bathed in glorious sunshine for much of the year and filled with historical monuments, taking a holiday rental villa in Magione couldn’t be a more relaxing experience.
The Castle of the Knights of Malta dominates the Magione skyline, standing proud and strong on the highest point of the town. The 11th century castle and hospital has been adapted and modified throughout the years, and although it is a wonderful sight, tours of the interior are by application only. The Fishing Museum of San Feliciano is well worth a visit from an apartment in Magione, as there are some fascinating artefacts from Trasimeno’s most important industry, food source and pastime. The Parochial Church and Church of Madonna delle Grazie are well worth visiting too.
The area around a Magione apartment could have been designed specifically for walking, cycling and riding holidays. There are vast swathes of uninterrupted countryside in all directions, both towards the undulating hills of the Umbrian countryside and towards the clear blue waters of Lake Trasimeno. The whole area is a maze of marked trails and paths taking in the finest sights and views across the region. Information on trails and sights are available from the Magione tourist information centre.
When travelling to self catering Magione holiday accommodation you will arrive into Perugia, which is well worth taking a few hours to explore on either you way to a Magione villa or on your way back home. Perugia has benefited from being somehow left of the mass tourist routes, despite being steeped in Etruscan, Roman and Medieval monuments to rival any in Italy. There is a genuinely youthful atmosphere in Perugia, with restaurants, cafes and bars spilling onto the ancient pavements long into the evenings.
The Mediterranean climate of Umbria is a real delight for anyone renting holiday accommodation in Magione. The long, hot summer days between early May and late October are a real asset to the Magione tourist industry, allowing you to eat outside in shirt sleeves for a huge proportion of the year. Even in winter, the few short months between December and February are not as cold as you might imagine. Temperatures tend to remain above 5˚C, even in the depths of winter.
The closest airport to a holiday rental in Magione is the Sant Egidio International Airport in Perugia (PEG), which is within an hour of any of the holiday accommodation in Magione. There are frequent flights to Perugia from London, provided by Ryanair.
