Things to do in Marathon, Greece
The term ‘Marathon’ originates from the distance between the site of the Battle of Marathon and Athens – 26 miles. The town was the starting point for the marathon races at both the 1896 and 2004 Summer Olympics, and it also still has some of the sporting facilities from the 2004 Olympics. Water sports enthusiasts should head for the beach at Schinias, which is an excellent windsurfing spot and is home to the Olympic Rowing Centre.
Schinias beach is the main draw for visitors to Marathon, and is situated on the south-east side of the town, just a few short kilometres away. Schinias is regularly rated as one of the finest beaches in the Attica region, being long and sandy, and circled by pine forests, making for some excellent photographic opportunities.
The deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea make for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving, and it is possible to find many other secluded spots along the rocky coastline, that other tourists have missed. Sesi Beach is one such sandy spot, which has clear waters that are perfect for swimming.

Marathon is less than half an hour from Athens and the ancient capital for Greece has much to offer. The Acropolis – one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Theatre of Dionysus and the Temple of Zeus are just three of the many famous landmarks to visit. Athens also has an excellent nightlife, with many great bars, cafes and restaurants that stay open until well into the small hours.

The Mediterranean climate of the Greek mainland means that Marathon receives hot, dry summers with temperatures above 30C. Spring and autumn are good times to visit if you plan on an active break in Marathon, as temperatures drop a few degrees and activity becomes that little bit easier. Winters are mild, with an average temperature of 11C.

Athens International Airport (ATH) is a busy airport that lies just over 30km from Marathon. Direct flights can be found from London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester through Easyjet.
