Mareuil is an excellent location for those seeking a rural destination, with enough amenities and activities to keep visitors occupied, but far away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Nestled in the heart of the Perigord Vert countryside, Mareuil is a quiet commune in the Dordogne department of south-western France. Those seeking an authentic break in rural France should consider renting a country house in Mareuil for their next vacation.
Mareuil has all of the basic amenities that you require in order to enjoy your holiday, including bars, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and various shops. Traditional markets are an important part of local life, and you can enjoy the sights, tastes and smells of the locally-produced fruit, vegetables, cheeses, wines and other fresh produce, - ideal for a self-catering holiday. A small market is held in Mareuil on a Tuesday, and there are various others on different days in the neighbouring villages.
For those looking for an active break, a number of sports can be enjoyed along the banks of the River Dronne, including kayaking, canoeing, swimming and fishing. There are also two golf courses just a short journey from Mareuil, and the surrounding countryside is perfect for walking, cycling and hiking.
The River Dronne surrounds the town of Brantome, and this picturesque location is another of the area’s ‘must-see’s’. The town boasts some great restaurants and cafe bars, prehistoric caves to explore, and the ancient Brantome Abbey to visit.
As Mareuil is a rural area, public transport is limited. The use of a hire car will allow you to explore the region to its fullest, and there are many surrounding towns and villages well worth visiting. Riberac (22km) has a larger set of amenities than Mareuil, including a famous market every Friday. Further south is Lake Jemaye, which offers some sandy beaches, a good range of water sports and some highly-rated restaurants. With a number of vineyards, distilleries and other attractions dotted around the region, the best bet is simply to get in the car and explore.
Mareuil and the surrounding Perigord Vert region has a particularly mild climate, and is a great holiday destination at any time of the year. As with most European towns and cities, June, July and August are the hottest times in which to visit, but even out of peak season the weather is unlikely to ruin your vacation.
Mareuil is centrally located to a number of airports, so it pays to shop around for the best deal when booking your flight. Limoges-Bellegarde (LIG) Airport is 90km north-east of Mareuil, and receives flights from a number of UK locations through Ryanair and Flybe. A second option is a flight to Bergerac-Roumaniere (EGC) 70km from your destination, with flights through the same two companies. Bordeaux-Merignac Airport (BOD) is the third primary option, and 100km from Mareuil.
