Things to do in Marseillan, France

Marseillan villas looking out over the Etang de Thau (a 20km inland sea) are beautiful. The views from any balcony in Marseillan are ones that will stay with you for a long time. The oysters and mussels farmed in the Etang de Thau are possibly the finest tasting in the world, and there are plenty of little restaurants and cafes along the seafront in which you can form an educated opinion! The town is wonderfully understated, with only small shops and restaurants in which to eat, and the quality of restaurant is absolutely fantastic. The Noilly-Prat wine is common throughout Marseillan, produced locally, and providing the ideal accompaniment to local dishes, there is no doubt that plenty will be enjoyed from a Marseillan villa!

Wandering the streets of Marseillan, there are many things that you must not miss. The ancient covered market halls are a real highlight of the town, and the Church of Saint John the Baptist is certainly endearing. However, the biggest attraction in Marseillan occurs on the 16th August each year, when the Capelet festival takes over the streets. Capelet is fantastic fun, and the most ancient tradition in Marseillan. Two hats are placed on the end of a slippery pole, and contestants must walk out across the harbour and try to retrieve the hats. Of course, the larger the fall, the larger the cheer from the baying crowd!

The nearby Canal du Midi is an activity haven, allowing excellent fishing, wonderfully peaceful canoeing and some of the most enchanting routes for walking, cycling and riding in the Herault region. The many ancient monuments of Herault are all within easy reach of a Marseillan property rental too, including the amazing Roman monuments of Nimes.

The closest beaches to Marseillan are found just 3km along the coast at Marseillan-Plage. There are many miles of safe, sandy beach on which to relax, offering stunning views across the sea towards North Africa. The white sand beach of Marseillan Plage stretches for as far as the eye can see, and is not only an excellent beach on which to sunbathe during the long summer days, but swimming, fishing and wind surfing holidays all thrive here.

The weather in this part of France is exceptional. The sun shines for over 300 days each year, with daily temperatures very rarely dipping below 15˚C at any time of year. The period between May and October sees daily peak temperatures well into the high 20’s (˚C) and almost always in the mid 30’s during July and August.

Cheap flights to Marseillan, France

The closest airport to a holiday rental property in Marseillan is Montpellier, which only receives direct flights from London, provided by Ryanair. If London is not a suitable departure point, there are plenty of options for flights to Carcassonne and Nimes, both of which are well within an hours drive. A hire car is by no means essential when you take a Marseillan holiday villa, but if you would like to explore all the attractions of Herault and Languedoc-Roussillon, it is made much easier by having the use of a car.
