Marti in Tuscany - Suggestions and tips for getting deep into Tuscany

This typical rural village of Etruscan origin is in the heart of Tuscany, midway between Pisa and Florence. It is also close to Siena, Lucca, Volterra, Vinci, and San Gimignano.

Each of these beautiful ancient towns and villages offers historical sights, panoramic views and culture for you to enjoy.

Nearby is the coast with the sandy beaches of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. These towns offer some of the best known night-life and discos in Italy. If it is a thermal experience you are interested in, the prestigious thermal spas of Montecatini and Casciana are within a short car journey.

There are many excellent restaurants situated in the towns and villages surrounding Marti. For sport enthusiasts there are local swimming pools, golf courses, riding schools as well as fishing, available at nearby lakes.

Pisa airport is approx. 32 kms, and Florence 45 kms. Hire cars are available at both airports and in both centres. The railway runs from Pisa to Florence with stations at Lucca, Empoli and Pontedera.

• Lucca is charming, with lots of stunning churches. A walk on its ancient, tree-lined walls around the old town is highly recommended. (Or you can hire a bike and do it in half the time!)
• San Gimignano is beautiful but very touristy. For a genuine taste of the place go at night when, it's said, the locals emerge!
• The hilltop town of San Miniato is picturesque and has wonderful views from its cafés.
• Certaldo is a nice, old, red-brick Alto Certaldo – reached by funicular railway from the square
• Castelfiorentino is also a nice, plain town, but its baroque church, Santa Verdiana is a joy. The frescoed interior is glorious.
