Massugas, Gironde - Set amongst the Vines and Rolling Countryside of South-West France
Massugas is a small village surrounded by Bordeaux vineyards, as far as the eye can see. The countryside, with its gently rolling hills and quiet roads, vineyards, and oak forests, is pretty and ideal for driving, cycling or walking. 10 minutes from the Dordogne River, with river trips and canoe hire for the more energetic, take a picnic and make a day of it. Massugas is a good base to visit the world famous town of St Emilion dedicated to wine and the appreciation off. Other towns within 30 minutes are Castillion de la Bataille which every summer (for 6 weeks) hosts a re-enactment of the last battle of the 100 years war, a fabulous outside spectacle. Monsegur, with its world famous jazz festival in June, is closeby as is Ste Foy La Grande with its enormous Saturday morning market. The town of Bergerac with its old town by the quay is worth a visit for shopping, museums and many restaurants. The city of Bordeaux is only an hour away and offers extraordinary architecture and of course, fabulous shopping for all budgets.
Local specialities such as wine, foie gras, confit de canard, walnuts, prunes and chaume cheese can be bought directly from producers or at the markets. Visits to vineyards and wine tastings are easily arranged. Restaurants, some of which specialise in local Perigordian food, are plentiful. Many restaurants still offer a 3 course lunch with wine for 12 euros per head. But there are plenty to choose from to suit all tastes and budgets.
All in all the countryside in and around Massugas is a beautiful area to stay and offers within a short distance plenty of interesting and varied places to visit and enjoy. Ideal for families and couples of all ages whether you want a summer holiday or an off season break.
