Medina Sidonia is listed in some sources as the oldest city in Europe, and has a number of interesting historical sites due to its heritage as a military defence location. A popular attraction is the Moorish fortress of Fortaleza and Alcazar, which sits at the very top of the hill and can be seen for miles around. Also worth a visit are the Duke Stables, which date back to the 16th century, but were refurbished in 1994 to become an exhibition hall. They lie in the medieval heart of town, which is also where you will find the town square (Plaza de Espana), which is a large and open meeting point where you will discover some of the oldest buildings in the region, as well as a good selection of bars and restaurants. Around the square are a number of narrow, cobbled streets which are so typical of the region, and head off in various directions to reveal different parts of the city. There are a number of town walks to be enjoyed here, which can easily fill a few days if you stop off at the various shops, cafes and tapas bars along the way.
