Things to do in Monpazier, France
The main draw of Monpazier is the village itself, which was built by Edward I in 1284 and is a National Heritage Site. The covered market square – the Place des Cornieres - is the main focal point, and the houses that surround it are all of an identical size and incorporate some fabulous architecture. Some buildings have been recently restored, but all retain their original dimensions, with a 13th Century Inn, timbered buildings and narrow streets all vying for your attention. Make sure you visit St. Dominique’s Church, which was also built in the 13th century, and has an unusual ribbed vault that extends out into the chevet at the eastern end.
Monpazier is busiest with tourists during summer months, and a number of events are held between July and September, including a cycle race around the bastide, a kermesse (festival), several specialist markets (including a mushroom market) and a medieval fete.
The countryside around Monpazier is hilly and wooded, and makes for some great hiking opportunities that will get you off the beaten tourist track. Within reasonable walking distance are the Chateau du Biron and the Dordogne River, and there are several neighbouring villages within reach if you are prepared to make a day of it. A good idea is to pick up a baguette, and some locally produced cheese and wine from the village shops and take a picnic with you to enjoy out in the countryside, under the sun.

The neighbouring villages of Biron (8km) and Capdrot (3km) are also home to some fantastic architecture, and are well worth a visit. Biron Castle has had many additions over the centuries, including the cellar kitchens, a 12th century dungeon, Renaissance apartments and san impressive state room. The nearest town is Bergerac (49km), which is famous for wine and tobacco production.
