The great thing about Montecastelli is that you are just 7km from the town of Umbertide, and 40km from the city Perugia, so not too far removed from the bars, restaurants and coffee shops which you may be accustomed to.
The area is steeped in history, and you can see medieval houses and the remains of the medieval walls in Umbertide. Unlike many other towns in the region, Umbertide is flat, making a stroll around town relatively easy. The main church in town is referred to as the Collegiata and dates back to the 16th century. It is octagonal in shape, and contains some interesting paintings by the artist Pomarancio.
The castle of Civitella Ranieri is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Umbria. It is open to the public, and visitors can roam around the dungeons or climb the 40 meter high tower. Various exhibitions are also on display with the halls.
Surrounding Montecastelli and Umbertide is a stunning mountainous landscape that is dotted with vineyards, olive groves and chestnut groves. These ingredients make up a big part of the local cuisine, and every effort should be made to sample then.
