Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Monteriggioni, Italy your home away from home
Monteriggioni is completely walled medieval town in the Province of Siena in Tuscany – and probably the best known walled town in Italy. Apart from a small amount of work done in the 16th Century, very little has been done to the town since it was built in the 13th Century by the overlords of Siena, making Monteriggioni an interesting and unique location for a self catering holiday.

Monteriggioni is so evocative of the medieval period that simply walking around the walled town and admiring the architecture is a major draw for the many tourists that visit every year. The walls and buildings are regarded as the best of their kind in Italy, and when the towers are lit up at night it can even give the appearance that the town is floating above its hilltop location, when viewed from outside of the walls.
The ‘Festa Medievale’ is held on the first weekend of every July, and draws an array of artists and performers from all over the country. Locals dress up in medieval costume and medieval drinks and dishes are available, making for a festival like no other. The main piazza of the town is dominated by the Piazza Roma – a Romanesque church. Narrow streets lead off the piazza, leading to an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, restaurants, wine tasting parlours and bars, making the city great for exploring, and enabling you to find somewhere without the throngs of tourists that can build up in Piazza Roma. The outlying areas of the town are covered in vineyards, and a wine tasting trip is an essential part of any visit.
