Monticello, Balagne, Haute-Corse - Monticello and its environs
One of the prettiest Balagne villages, Monticello is only a short drive from the seaside town of L'Ile Rousse and sits in a dominating position with magnificent views of the Balagne coastline and over towards Cap Corse.
Although popular with French celebrities, Monticello also famously captivated the British writer and broadcaster Frank Muir, who bought a property in the centre of the village in the 1950's which is still owned by the family today. In his biography, 'A Kentish Lad', Muir stated, "....we would rather be in Monticello than anywhere else on the island."
The village square is surrounded by olive trees and has a well-stocked épicerie and also boasts 'A Pastuerella', a stylish gastro-Corsican restaurant, widely regarded as one of the best in the Balagne. In the heart of the village also stands the imposing Maison Malaspina, formerly owned by descendants of Pascal Paoli's family and where Napoleon is reputed to have spent time.
Monticello is overlooked by the 13th century Castel d'Ortica, built by the great warlord Giudice della Rocca and by the ancient chapel of St. Francoise, where in the summer months a variety of music concerts are often held. The main village fete, dedicated to St. Roch, takes place on the 15th and 16th of August each year.
There is also a sporting complex with a swimming pool, horse-riding centre, tennis courts and mini-golf. For more serious golfers however, a short drive away in the spectacular Reginu Valley is the Golf du Reginu, a well- maintained nine-hole course set in an idyllic position surrounded by olive groves and stunning mountain views.
