One of the top attractions just outside of Montignac is the Lascaux Cave. This cave system contains almost 2000 prehistoric cave paintings of mostly animals, estimated at 16,000 years old. The cave and other prehistoric sites of the Vezere Valley have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Within about half an hour’s drive is the beautiful town of Perigueux with its Roman remains, pus the Cathedral which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. In the greater area, Dordogne contains more than 5000 castles – how many will you visit?!
