As Montreux is positioned on the north-east shore of Lake Geneva, spectacular views of the lake can be witnessed from around the town, and from some of the rental accommodation that can be found on its shores. The area around the lake makes for excellent walking, whilst seasoned hikers should consider taking the funicular up the mountainside for more challenging routes. The main ski resort in the area is at Villars-sur-Ollon, which has 100km of pistes for all skiing and snowboarding abilities.

Chateau de Chillon is one of Switzerland’s most widely visited tourist attractions, and is a series of 100 independent buildings that are all interlinked to create one whole castle. Some of the older parts of the castle date back to the 11th century, and are home to historical exhibits that can be viewed by the public.

One of the more interesting landmarks in the area is a statue of Freddie Mercury, which was erected in homage to the town’s famous former resident, who was also a part owner of the famous Mountain Studios which were once in the town. Montreux also holds a memorial day in honour of Queen’s lead singer, held during the first weekend of September every year.

When it comes to nightlife, Montreux Casino was rebuilt in 1975 after a fire, and has remained a popular destination for both tourists and locals ever since. A number of restaurants, cafes and bars can also be found both in the town centre and along the shores of Lake Geneva.

Montreux has good bus, rail and ferry links for those wishing to explore the surrounding region during their stay. An interesting day trip can be had to the market town of Vevey, just 7km along the shores of the lake. The nearest big city is Lausanne, 30km away.
