Things to do in Murren, Switzerland
Murren is the highest ski resort in the Bernese Oberland and there are slopes for all abilities from beginners to advances with snowboarders also well-catered to. There are also plenty of opportunities for cross-country skiing around the town and the nearby river valley.
There are also several things to do off piste. Beginners can learn the basics of curling, and after a bit of practice enter into one of the weekly tournaments. Toboggans can be hired and there are several great runs around the town.
The fun doesn’t end with the ski season however. There are lots of different hiking trails around the area, covering all abilities levels, and all are easily accessed from your Murren self-catering accommodation. A little culture can also be combined with your stroll on one of the historical walks run around the area. For the more adventurous there are also some real mountaineering trails in the nearby mountains.
For something a little more relaxing, families can enjoy a game of mini-golf or take a dip in the town’s open-air swimming pool. At the end of a busy day, visitors can also relax and enjoy dinner with a view at the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, made famous in the Bond flick “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
Places to visit on holiday in Murren, Switzerland
For a day away from the slopes visitors should head to the nearby city of Bern across the border in Germany, recognised as a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. As you would expect, this means there are lots of sights to see around the centre, including the Time Bell clock with moving puppets, a Gothic cathedral, the Bear Pit (minus the bears) and the Federal Palace.
Visitors to Bern can also catch a play at one of the city’s many theatres, and the city also plays host to several festivals in both summer and winter.
Weather in Murren, Switzerland
Summers in Bern can be surprisingly warm, with average temperatures of up to 18C during July and August. Winters are of course much colder, sitting below 0C on most days between December and February. This is of course great for skiing, and Murren has high levels of snowfall throughout the season.
Flights to Murren, Switzerland
Murren is served by Bern Airport (BRN) 72km to the north, which receives flights from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa on a daily basis. From here visitors will need to take a transfer to the resort. Alternatively, your Murren chalet can be reached by the mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen, or for a more scenic journey, take the aerial cableway from Stechelberg.
