Located in the beautiful countryside in the Dordogne
In the warmth of the summer sun, visitors can make the most of the outdoor activities that Mussidan and the immediate area have to offer. Walking, hiking and cycling are popular activities that take you on the many trails through medieval villages, passed splendid chateaux and along the banks of the tranquil River Isle.
The river that runs through the village is the perfect place to start on a canoeing journey. The River Isle is also perfect for those who love fishing. You can hire a boat and spend the day in the sun trying to hook some carp or trout. Mussidan also has its own open-air swimming pool which is open between the months of July and August.
In the centre of Mussidan is a small music college which is surrounded by a beautiful garden; visitors can also enjoy the small church situated above the main square which offers spectacular views of the countryside.
Mussidan also has a museum of arts & crafts, the Musée Andre Voulgre, which is located in a magnificent 18th century building. Here visitors can enjoy learning about the evolution of the villager’s every day life and learn what has changed in the Perigord region through the years.
If you are still craving some adventure then help is close at hand. In the immediate area of the village of Mussidan there are opportunities to go horse riding, hire a pedalo to saunter along the River Isle and play a round of golf on a wonderfully green golf course.
The town of Bergerac is a stone’s throw away from Mussidan and is one of the best places to enjoy some refreshing French wine. Famous vineyards are available in abundance in and around Bergerac and holiday makers are invited to stroll among the vines and learn about the region’s history of wine-making. Generally, visitors can enjoy some wine with another of the region’s delicacies, Fois Gras. Bergerac also has a Tobacco Museum, a golf club and large covered market, which offers a wide variety of wines, local produce and arts & crafts.
The time to go to Mussidan is definitely during the summer months. In May and June in particular, temperatures of 35°C are regularly reached and occasionally there is a thunderstorm which helps to clear the air, making it fresh for the hikes and walks. September and October are also good months to holiday in Mussidan but there can be occasional showers – these are few and far between and do not last for very long though!
British Airways, Ryanair, Flybe, amongst others offer flights to Bergerac Airport (EGC), which is a convenient 20 minute journey to Mussidan. Ryanair can fly you out from Bristol (BRS), London Stansted (STD), Liverpool (LPL) and East Midlands (EMA). Flybe offers flights from London Gatwick (LGW), Southampton (SOU), Edinburgh (EDI), Leeds (LBS) and Exeter (EXT). British Airways have direct flights to Bordeaux Airport (BOR) from Birmingham (BHX).
