The Greek island of Mykonos is an extremely popular tourist destination, known for its busy nightlife and hordes of partying youngsters that flock to the island every summer. The island is part of the Cyclades, and consists of several towns and villages, with the capital itself known as Mykonos, or Chora – the Greek for ‘town’. Things to do in Mykonos, Greece
Mykonos is most well known for its nightlife, and has a huge amount of bars and clubs – with top international DJ’s regularly performing on the island. This makes Mykonos a prime summer destination for UK-based tour companies aimed at the 18-30 year-old age bracket. The most boisterous nightlife is in Mykonos town, and those looking for something a bit less intense can head to Agios Stefanos or Psarou, which both have some excellent seafood restaurants. Mykonos is marketed as a gay-friendly resort, and there are several gay bars dotted around the island.
The island has a great selection of beaches, with Paradise Beach the most popular, and locations such as Elia Beach and Psarou Beach offering more relaxing atmosphere. An array of water sports is available at many of the 20 beaches, and some allow nudist sunbathing.
Being such a prime tourist destination, there are a huge variety of activities available all over the island. You can rent a bike, car, moped or even a helicopter for the day to get a better view of the island, and there are a range of art galleries, shops and health and beauty spa’s to visit. Interesting landmarks worth a look include the 16 th Century Mykonos windmills and the Paraportiani – an impressive 15 th century church.
Delos is one of Greece’s most famous archaeological sites, and is a small island just two kilometres west of Mykonos. The whole island has been declared a national museum, and extensive excavations are ongoing. Delos has a number of historically important landmarks, and can be reached via a short boat ride from Mykonos.

By hiring a bike or car you are able to visit any one of 20 beaches on the island, are alternate between the crowds of Mykonos town and the relative serenity of several other towns and villages, including Psarou and Agios Stefanos. If you fancy a spot of Greek Island hopping, consider taking the short journey across the water to Naxos, Tinos, Syros, or any of the other 35 Cycladic islands.

Mykonos experiences a fantastically warm summer, with temperatures above 30C on most days from July to September. The throngs of tourists dissipate as autumn and winter arrive, and temperatures drop to around 10C.
Flights to Mykonos, Greece
Flights are readily available from the UK to Mykonos Airport (JMK) over the summer. Due to a dramatically reduced level of demand, most flights will require you to travel via Athens outside of the peak tourist season.
