The old centre is wonderfully romantic, with plenty of seafood restaurants, beach cafes and atmospheric tavernas in which to sit and look out over the water towards the Bourtzi island fortress. Tours to the Bourtzi Fortress leave from the harbour. The oldest fortress, the Akonafplia is well worth investigating from Nafplion accommodation, as is the Palamidi Castle high above the town.

Nafplion is not a beach town yet there are some magnificent places to place your towel within walking distance of the centre of town. The most popular is Arvanitia Beach, a short walk from Palamidi, although Karathona has the finest sand. If you are looking for more beach facilities, the beach resorts of Kios and Irion are both under 15 minutes away by car.

There are also stunning archaeological sites in and around Nafplion. The impressive ruins of Tiryns and Asine are fascinating, and the panoramic views across the countryside are equally spectacular.
