Things to do in Naxos, Greece

Naxos has some fantastic beaches, and sun-lovers can laze away the day at Agios Prokipios, Kastraki, Plaka and Agia Anna, to name just a few. For those who fancy something a bit more active, a variety of water sports are on offer from most beaches, and bike hire is freely available. The majority of the beaches are within a short distance of Hora (or Chora), the largest town in Naxos, which is also known as Naxos City.

The great thing about Naxos City is that most points of interest are within reasonable walking distance of each other. Portara is known as the ‘trademark’ of Naxos, and is a giant marble doorway which has stood for thousands of years. Other must-sees include the Venetian Castle, Naxos Castle and the market in the Old Town.

For those fancying a bit of shopping, the city has a variety of jewellery, souvenir, clothes and shoe shops, and is the island is well known for its fine marble and handcrafted textiles. Simply walking around and browsing can take up a good proportion of your day.

Though nightlife in Naxos is not as vibrant as some of the nearby islands, there are still a respectable selection of restaurant and bars to choose from. Naxos is famous for its excellent potatoes, olives and a liqueur named ‘Kitron’. The majority of the nightlife is located along the sea front, with popular clubs Ocean Club and Cream Club found at the south end of the waterfront.

There are many villages dotted around Naxos, with Glinardo the most notable for its picturesque hill top location. If you have the time and money you can try a bit of island-hopping. Ios and Mykonos have developed into party hotspots for young revellers, whilst Paros is an up-and-coming tourist destination that is steeped in history.

The Cyclades Islands are well known for their fantastic weather, and Naxos is no different. Summer temperatures peak at well over 30C, and when the tourists disappear in the winter, locals are still enjoying mild temperatures and low rainfall. Like the other Cyclades Islands, Naxos is exposed to strong winds during the summer.

Naxos itself has an airport (airport code JNX), though direct services from the UK can be hard to find outside of peak summer months. Unless you visit in July or August you will likely have to change at Athens (SPJ).
