Nea Makri Beach stretches for 6km along the Mediterranean coast. The sand is course, but by no means rough, or uncomfortable on which to lie and swimming conditions are perfect. You will still see people swimming off Nea Makri Beach throughout the winter, but that doesn’t mean the sea is still a warm place to relax.
There is no need to travel to nearby Athens for history either. A temple complex, the Temple of Ixis, has only recently been excavated just outside Nea Makri, offering incredible history right to the doorstep of your self catering Nea Makri villa. The site of the battle of Marathon is also well within range, including the excellent Marathon Museum.
The town itself is full of great places to eat, especially if you have a taste for fish, which is a local speciality. Tavernas are also not in short supply, although this is not meant to suggest the town is packed long into the evening.

Of course, with Athens just 35km down the road, the majority of guests in Nea Makri houses spend at least a day exploring the international marvels of the Greek capitol. During the summer months, the most famous sites, including the Parthenon, can get very crowded, making autumn and spring the best time to explore.
The port in Rafina also means that daytrips to some of the closer Greek Islands are a great option. Aegina Island makes a wonderful daytrip, where you can enjoy excellent scuba diving, as well as a great range of other water sports.

The enviable Mediterranean climate that Nea Makri enjoys means that the combination of sightseeing and lazy days on the beach are a much enjoyed feature of life from May until September. If you are looking to exploit the crowdless attractions of Athens during the winter, temperatures remain mild and perfectly pleasant.

Nea Makri houses are wonderfully easy to reach from the UK. Athens International Airport (ATH) receives direct flights from across the UK on a daily basis. The port at Rafina, just 5 miles away is a great asset too, meaning that there are a range of islands within range of a daytrip from a Nea Makri apartment or villa.
