Vesuvius.
Staying in a smaller city such as Nola is a great idea if you wish to enjoy a holiday in Naples, but are seeking somewhere slightly quieter to use as a base, and are hoping to avoid the inflated prices that can sometimes be charged at popular tourist destinations. Eating out is always an enjoyable experience in this traditional Italian city, and the city’s restaurants serve a variety of types of cuisine to keep all members of the family happy – though pizza and pasta are typically the specialities and appear on the vast majority of menus.
The city of Nola dates back many hundreds of years, and the older buildings in the centre remain well-preserved despite centuries of earthquake and fire. The ancient Gothic cathedral and its lofty tower have been painstakingly restored over the years, and is a good place to start exploring the historical side of the city, with the Basilica of San Tommaso and the 15th century Palazzo Orsini also holding plenty of interest.
Nola hosts two main events every year; one in June and one in November. These are particularly good times for a holiday in the city, and will provide you with the perfect opportunity to mingle with city’s residents and try more of the excellent local cuisine.
The famous city of Naples is easy to reach when staying in Nola, as the two are directly linked via the Circumvesuviana railway line, which runs around the base of Mt. Vesuvius. Even closer to Nola are other famous destinations such as Pompei (21km) which also more than warrant a few hours of your precious holiday time.
