Romania is divided into 41 counties and four main historical regions. Moldavia, also known as Moldova, is to the north east of the country. Otenia and Muntenia are in the south of Romania around the capital, Bucharest. Until recently these regions were collectively known as Greater Wallachia. Muntenia is Romania’s heartland, with a cultural mix of cities surrounded by splendid mountain scenery. The area is ideal for holiday rentals in Romania, with cultural and historic sights, castles, mountains and superb scenery, offering plenty of things to do for all ages and interests.
The mountains of Muntenia provide excellent walking, hiking and outdoor pursuits during the summer. In the winter there is skiing, snowboarding and winter sports at very affordable prices. Sightseeing is very rewarding in the area, with many castles, royal residences and fantastic architecture. Sampling Romania’s cuisine will include some of the best fruits of the region, from tasty plums to grapes, tomatoes and sour cherries. The rivers which run down from the Carpathian Mountains, including the mighty Danube, provide for boat trips, kayaking, fishing and pleasant riverside walking.
Bucharest, the Paris of the East, has retained its gems of stunning architecture and grand palaces such as Ceausescu's Palace of Parliament. The Old Capital city is Curtea de Arges, best known for the “Dracula Castle” at Poienari. Lake Vidraru has deep emerald green waters while further up in the mountains Balea Lake remains frozen all year round. Sinaia is the nearest major mountain resort to Bucharest. Make the two hour journey by train through some of Muntenia’s spectacular scenery. Peonies, Edelweiss and golden gentians bloom beneath the trees. The Bucego National Park is also nearby. Sinaia is the home of Romania’s most famous royal residence “Pelisor” which is still lived in by the monarch, HM King Michael I. Another stunning building to visit is the Sinaia Casino. The Sinaia Monastery is known as the “Pearl of the Carpathians” and is thoroughly charming to visit. The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The river ports along the Danube are also worth a visit. Wherever your holiday rental in Oltenia, Muntenia and Moldavia happens to be, there will be a river port within easy reach.
The weather around Bucharest is hot and sunny in the summer and freezing in the winter. From May to the end of October temperatures are very pleasant, ranging from 15-27°C (60-82°F) for daytime average highs.
