Things to do in Ossuccio, Italy

Many of the visitors to Ossuccio are on a pilgrimage to the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site located 2.5km outside of the town. The Sacro Monte is a site of 14 chapels, built in the Baroque style, which are of great religious significance in the Catholic faith.

Visitors to Ossuccio can also explore the Villa del Balbiano, a 16th century villa on the outskirts of the town, with beautiful architectural design, frescoes and traditional Mediterranean gardens.

Although it is not on Italy’s coast, visitors to Ossuccio can enjoy the Ospealetto beach on the shores of Lake Como. Here, visitors can laze away the day on the sand, take a dip in the lake and relax with a cocktail from the bar.

For the more active visitor, there are lots of water sports on offer on the Lake, including sailing, kite surfing and canoeing, and hiking opportunities are available in the mountains. Only a 10-minute boat trip from Ossuccio will take you to Bellagio, one of the lake’s larger towns, where visitors can wander around Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, browse the boutiques on the waterfront promenade, or pig out on traditional Italian far in one of the many cafes and restaurants.

Como is also easily accessed by either car or rail, only 26km south of Ossuccio along the lake shore. This is the largest town around the lake, and is home to some impressive sights, including a Gothic cathedral, and an art gallery. Visitors can also ride the funicular to the crest of the hill which sits above the town. From here there are spectacular views across the lake, making for a great photo opportunity.

Lake Como is best enjoyed in the summer sunshine, when temperatures in Ossuccio reach up to around 25C. Winters are much cooler, with temperatures sometime dropping below freezing. There is a risk of showers pretty much all year round, but this makes for the perfect excuse to drop into a local cafe and sample a steaming bowl of pasta or a hot coffee.

Flights to Ossuccio, Italy

Ossuccio is served by Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP), which is 83km southwest of the town, 45km from the centre of Milan itself. Car hire is recommended in this area given the quite rural location, and all of the major operators have a base at the airport. Alternatively, there are rail links from the airport to Ossuccio self-catering accommodation and several other towns in the region.
