Right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America's most beautiful scenic routes is your own private mountain getaway. Enjoy the spectacular view of the Blue Ridge mountains while relaxing in the 8 person hot tub (year-round) on the deck. House had major makeover winter of 2006-2007. Tucked away in your own hollow of 10 acres, there is cleared land for badminton, volleyball, croquet, barbecue and hiking. Fine dining and bars are less than 1 mile away. The Biltmore House, America's premier castle is 40 minutes away in Asheville, NC. Linville Caverns are 30 minutes away via the Parkway. 2 hour drive from Charlotte and 40 minutes from Boone. Golfing and hiking easily accessible.

Nearest Motorway: Hwy. 40 and Hwy 226 at 20 Miles
Switzerland Inn Restaurant: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Steaks are the best, especially the Filet Mignons! Switzerland Café: Lunch only. Best sandwiches and homemade cakes and pies in North Carolina! Downtown Little Switzerland where all the action is. Little Switzerland Book Exchange: Downtown Little Switzerland across from the Post Office. Find incredible values from books out of print to hard-to-find editions. Emerald Village: Follow the signs, they are everywhere! Or just ask. Penland School of Crafts: Off Highway 19 is the exit to Penland. Pick up a brochure at the house or Switzerland Inn. Apple Orchard at Altapass: Go on the Parkway past the 226 Exit and just a few short miles you will see it on the right. Spend a few hours viewing mountain crafts. Horseback riding is available at Springmaid Mountain, a 15 minute drive from the house.

A Little History and Glimpse of the Future: We call our mountain getaway in Little Switzerland the 'Rieke Retreat'. It has been in the family since 1970. It used to be an old homestead for the 'McKinney family' starting in the 1920's. Every year we have done a significant refurbishing to where it is really nice today.

What is 'LSD'?: 'LSD' means Little Switzerland Downtown. It is only nine-tenths of a mile from our house. The New Book Exchange is the highlight. Here you can relax on a sofa in front of a big fireplace, sip coffee or wine and get lost in the book of your choice (I forgot the classical music in the background). Hungry? Go next door to the Little Switzerland Cafe and have the best Trout BLT in the world followed by apple pie and ice cream! Need a bottle of wine and some cheese for later on? Go through the doors to the Little Switzerland General store and they have quite a selection. You have entered another world. And you are not dreaming......

Ski: Nearby Ski Resorts are in Banner Elk, Blowing Rock which include Appalachian, Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain. Approx. 45 minutes from the house.

Golf: Grassy Creek Golf course is a public course only 10 minutes away in Spruce Pine. Mount Mitchell Golf Course is about 20 minutes away and is under the largest mountain East of the Mississippi River - Mt. Mitchell. It is well-established and famous for its layout and views. Make your reservations here in advance. You can also eat in the clubhouse or at Albert's German Restaurant.

Still One of the Best

We've visited this wonderful hide-away many times since we honeymooned here in 1990. This was our first return since the kitchen/dining area remodel and gorgeous decor upgrade. Did not want to leave. If you love long range vistas, privacy, and easy access to mountain area attractions, this is your place. We reside in the Asheville area, but this is still one of our favorite "sneak away" places - all the amenities of home with none of the chores. Clean, beautiful mountain cabin decor. Great chicken salad at the LS Cafe and Dannys in Spruce Pine. The Blue Ridge Parkway drives and vistas change with every visit. Exceeded our expectations.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Girls Getaway, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway

Great Romantic Getaway

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Rieke Retreat and had a wonderful time! This is a great place to get away from the world and enjoy the beautiful North Carolina Mountains.
We enjoyed the cabin, and we had a great time exploring sites along the parkaway.
Recommended for:  Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway

Excellent retreat! We would rate it high in these areas: A) location, B)secure, secluded and private, C) The View! D) well appointed cabin including comfort, AC, decor, deck, hot tub, grounds, kitchen and E) every detail is attended to by the owners and thoroughly communicated to the guests. A great place and we definitely will be back. We have already have reserved dates in 2009.
