Lubec holiday house

First off, if you're looking at any house in this part of Maine, you are probably already the kind of person who realize that the main attraction of Downeast Maine is quaint old houses, a simple lifestyle, and inumerable outdoor adventure opportunities. If you are the kind of person that requires cable TV, high speed internet, hopping nightlife, and trendy dining opportunities, than Downeast Maine is not for you.
My entire experience with the home and homeowner was great. I had never rented home via the internet, and know that pictures and words can make anything look like a five-star location. The owner's listing on HomeAway is dead-on accurate. The pictures show exactly what you get--in this case, an old farmhouse complete with low doorways, plank wood floors, rustic furniture, and big, big windows that look out over a beautiful bay toward a small lighthouse and the village of Lubec. Everything was neat and clean when we arrived. Given the price of hotels, the rental was very reasonable!
The house sits 75 feet from the high tide, and is located well off the road. Although there are open wildflower meadows on either side of the house, to the west an abandoned Coast Guard boat house adds to the old Maine feel. The house to the east is far enough away and screened by somes tree as to be unobtrusive.

Except for a few lobstermen working their pots in the bay, the only noises you hear are gentle waves slapping the shore, birds, and when its foggy, the distant hooo-aaah of the West Quoddy Head foghorn. Sunsets from the front yard (which faces the bay) are simply incredible.

What makes the house a great place to stay is more than just the quiet quaintness of the area. The real attraction for this house is its location on Quoddy Head, literally bordering public lands of little-used Quoddy Head State Park. The park lands include access to a huge tidal flat where traditional Maine clam diggers search for their clams, two arctic heath bogs with unique plants, rugged high cliffs fronting the Bay of Fundy, and one of the prettiest lighthouses you'll find in Maine. All of this is a 20 minute stroll of the house! We spent a full day just hiking the Quoddy Head trails and exploring the cobble beach below the lighthouse.

Also within 45 minutes of the house are the parklands of Campobello Island (and an even prettier lighthouse), a unique reversing tidal waterfall with playful seals, and some great sea kayaking opportunities. A week flys by here!
