Photos and Description of this Westport Island holiday cottage

Your summer retreat awaits you at the most charming, Trading Post, built in the early 1800's. Watch osprey, great blue heron, seals, eagles, sea gulls, lobster boats, sailboats, and yachts from your private 32 foot deck. The first floor living/dining area and master bedroom (king) sport sliding doors to deck-- these 8 & 11 foot walls of glass reveal sweeping southeastern views of the pristine saltwater river- the Sheepscot. Like a slide show the scenes are constantly changing. Since this 'over-water' unique gem serves as our guest house it has limited availability during the season and is not your 'typical' rental property thus quite well equipped. Listed on National Register of Historic Places with over 100 private acres of woods, fields, coves and extensive, accessible waterfront for you to explore. Launch kayaks or canoes (available for delivery). Dock, run and float are just steps from the Trading Post.Secluded location yet still easily accessible to mid-coast attractions.

Splendid Seclusion, Easy Access to Midcoast

Bride and Groom St. Louis
Review Submitted: May 12, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Perched above the shoreline of the Sheepscot River, this inviting heirloom cottage offers seclusion for those who value it. You'll hear water lapping the pilings beneath the floorboards and sea lions roaring as they bask on a rocky ledge exposed by the receding tide.

The magnificent cottage view takes in a sweeping expanse of shoreline and a forested river bank on the opposite side. The travel of the sun, the sweeping cloud covers, and morning mist continuously alter the light and shadow throughout the day.

The rapidly changing tides redraw the curves of the shoreline hourly. After sunset, a pulsing light house beacon can be spotted downriver where the Sheepscot and the Atlantic meet.

My wife and I have been visiting this jewel of a cottage for 25 years (we were married on the front deck). Although there are many engaging Midcoast activities and landmark destinations to enjoy on day excursions, we have at times passed our entire vacation savoring the cottage and its surroundings with only a grocery-store run to remind us of civilization.

We highly recommend this unique cottage, its dazzling waterfront site and many acres of pristine forest, its easy access to Route One and the Midcoast, and its friendly and helpful owners.

Privacy and Seclusion on the Ocean in Comfort

Rise Phillipston MA 01331
Review Submitted: May 31, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
My husband and I went for a week in 08, based on the photos. The photos don't do it justice! If you want privacy, peace and quiet, this is the place to be. We brought our kayak with us, and found it to be awesome kayaking, good for beginners. The more experienced kayakers can go further afield, all from the front dock. You can watch seals basking at low tide, from the deck. Our older children (19 and 23) visited for a few days, and also loved the peace and quiet. If you love the ocean, this is the place to be. Has a lot of history too. We are coming back this year. After years of taking vacations on Georgetown Island, we are hooked for this location.
The master bedroom is very comfortable. The upstairs bedroom is a loft-attic space, all open and spartan. Worked fine for the older children, who were ready to camp if necessary.
We highly recommend this place.

We'll Return to This Idyllic Shoreline Cottage

Fashion Girl Midwest
Review Submitted: May 18, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
My husband and I are repeat visitors. That says a lot about this alluring cottage and its surroundings. You’ll be treated to a view of the tidal Sheepscot River that’s a wow!, with a near 180-degree vista of the river and the distant shore of Barters Island. Photographers, it’s impossible to take a bad picture here.

The cottage affords easy access to Route 1 and the pleasures of the Midcoast, including lobster festivals, windjammer cruises, the Wyeth Museum in Rockland, the L.L. Bean outlet in Freeport, enchanting Boothbay Harbor with its plentiful restaurants and sailing events, plus myriad opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and biking (many rental spots). Grab great values at the Goodwill in Bath (20-minute drive).

The cobblestone streets of the historic Old Port section in Portland (45-minute drive) lead to boutique shopping, one-of-a-kind stores, several good bookshops and a vibrant nightlife. Be sure to treat yourself to an all-natural pizza baked in wood-fired clay ovens at the Flatbread Company on Commercial St. And don’t miss Becky’s Diner, also on Commercial, for a tasty and filling breakfast at modest prices.

Closer to Westport Island, the village of Wiscasset offers Red’s Eats (often cited by The New York Times) where vacationers form a line on the sidewalk for Red’s famous clam and lobster rolls. Directly across the street, Sarah’s Cafe serves sit-down meals, wonderful soups and a changing selection of homemade breads. Further along Water St., Le Garage restaurant features a downstairs bar overlooking the water (still free popcorn the last time we were there). Visit art galleries, a wine shop, antique stores galore, and a great thrift shop at the Episcopal Church on Hodge St. On Route 1 at the turnoff for Westport Island, there is a rental shop that will deliver and pick up your choice of a good quality single or tandem kayaks.

My husband and I always make fascinating (and sometimes challenging) discoveries on each visit. We plan to return to this uniquely charming cottage in future summers.

Quaint and rustic

Maine lovers Chicago
Review Submitted: July 14, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2007
Beautiful location with tidal pools and a little beach for swimming. It was magical for our children. The property is expansive with plenty of wild life, beautiful pathways through the woods and wide open sunny spaces. The owners are friendly and on the property if you should need anything. Living arrangements are pleasant, but the living room could really use some new furniture. Its very uncomfortable. Otherwise the place feels happy and clean. The bedrooms, kitchen and dining are cozy and comfortable. The unique history of the cottage allows your imagination to roam to sea captains and sailing ships. The only thing preventing us from re-renting is the uncomfortable living area. But if you don't mind rustic, the price is right and the location cannot be better!
